The FIRST (Fundamental Inspection Repair System Training) and EDGE (Emissions Diagnostics Graduate Education) emissions repair curriculum was developed through the Air Care Colorado program with funding from Envirotest Systems Corp. It was developed to be taught by local community colleges and any private training facility wishing to teach it. The following course descriptions are from the Snap-On training brochure:

*  FIRST
This is a comprehensive program that corrects misconceptions and misunderstandings of automotive fundamentals. FIRST covers basic electronics and DVOM reading and scaling, with emphasis on voltage drop, computer controlled ignition systems including distributorless systems, feedback carbureted systems and fuel injection systems, four-gas analysis as well as computer system interrogation using scan tools. Wiring diagram reading and ignition scope waveform skills are taught in this class.

*  EDGE
This is an advanced driveability and enhanced emission diagnosis and repair program. EDGE covers I/M 240 testing and repair strategies, evaporative system diagnosis and repair, five-gas analysis, enhanced DVOM and scan tool techniques, OBD II diagnosis, Labscope Waveform analysis, non-scan tool diagnosis, critical flow path diagnostic strategies and catalytic converter testing procedures. Includes many hours of hands-on lab time. This is the best comprehensive driveability course you will ever take.
